Buying with confidence

How to buy a memorable mobile number safely

Check the exact digits, the transfer route and the seller’s evidence before paying. Here is a practical checklist for your next number.

Before buying a memorable mobile number, confirm the exact digits, how it will reach you and what the listing’s checks actually mean. An attractive number and a reassuring badge are not substitutes for clear transfer instructions and a record of your purchase.

Check every digit and the complete cost

Read the number without spaces, then compare it with the title, card and order summary. Different groupings can make the same number look surprisingly different. If any digit disagrees, stop and ask for clarification before paying.

Check the asking price and any delivery or service costs shown at checkout. A memorable-number purchase is separate from choosing an ongoing mobile tariff unless the listing explicitly says otherwise. Do not assume that airtime, credit or a contract is included.

Know which transfer route you are buying

Listing routeWhat to establish before purchase
PAC transferThe current network, the intended receiving provider and the order’s transfer steps. Ask about same-network situations rather than assuming a standard port will work.
New Unregistered SIMWhich network supplies the SIM, how it will be delivered, any stated expiry and what you need to do to activate it.

For an ordinary switch between providers, Ofcom explains that the current user can request a PAC by texting PAC to 65075. The code lasts 30 days and is given to the receiving provider. Confirm your particular transfer with that provider. Read Ofcom’s switching guidance.

Do not send a PAC to a stranger in public comments, an image or a listing description. Use the transfer instructions associated with your order. If a message asks you to move the transaction or send sensitive information elsewhere, verify it with PYN through the site first.

Understand the limits of verification

An SMS check can demonstrate access to a number at the time of that check. It does not independently prove a person’s legal entitlement to sell it, guarantee a later port or certify the number’s entire history. A carrier result provides network evidence; it is not the same as completed delivery.

For a New Unregistered SIM, evidence follows a different route because there may be no active line available to receive a code. Read the listing’s actual status and ask about anything unclear. “Fast Shipping” describes a delivery route; it is not a promise of a particular arrival date unless one is expressly given.

Keep control of your accounts

Use a strong, separate password for your email and enable two-step verification on important accounts. The NCSC recommends two-step verification as an additional protection even when a password is compromised.

Before giving up a number you currently use, move account-recovery details and authentication settings to a number or method you will retain. Never give a buyer access to your email, banking, social media or mobile-provider password. A number transfer should not become a transfer of your personal accounts.

Keep a clear purchase record

  • Save the listing details, exact digits, stated transfer route and order confirmation.
  • Read the current terms and refund/transfer policy before paying.
  • Keep communication and payment linked to the recorded transaction.
  • Raise mismatches, missing delivery details or unexpected instructions promptly through the site.

If something goes wrong, describe what happened and keep the relevant messages. Do not publish a PAC, verification code or identity document when asking for help.

Make the final check

A good purchase should be easy to describe: these are the digits, this is the price, this is the transfer route, and this is how we will record completion. If one part is missing, ask before paying. Explore available numbers when you are comfortable with those details.
